The Mexican artist Enrique Chagoya (Mexico City, 1953), combines in his first exhibition in a museum in Europe, characters from comics, cartoon films and popular culture with figures drawn from the worlds of politics, art history, the economy and religion, to which he adds others that he himself has invented. As a result, he creates an imaginary on numerous levels in the manner of a palimpsest, which is rewritten in his own work and throughout the exhibition. The opening section explores what Chagoya describes as “reverse anthropology” and engages in a certain critique of colonialism, with a special emphasis on the subject of immigration.
The design concept is based on the use of the metaphor of the palimpsest and colonialism, merging two different calligraphies. The first one is the Gothic calligraphy, used over several centuries in the Middle Ages of Europe for the manual creation of copies of the Bible. The second is a typography incorporating contemporary strokes, created by ourselves using a computer.
